A New Drinking Water Supply is Coming

The Willamette Water Supply System (WWSS) partners of Tualatin Valley Water District, the City of Hillsboro and the City of Beaverton, will each integrate the new WWSS water source differently for their service area and customers are encouraged to visit their water provider for more information about integration specific to their location/provider.

A New System, a Trusted Supply

The Willamette Water Supply Program is a partnership between the Tualatin Valley Water District, the City of Hillsboro and the City of Beaverton to develop the mid-Willamette River at Wilsonville as an additional water supply source.

This new system, when operational in 2026, will provide a reliable water supply for the region by helping water system operators balance supply during times of drought or other supply interruptions, as well as recover more quickly after a large natural disaster.

Spanning from Wilsonville to Hillsboro, the new system will deliver reliable, high-quality water to more than 350,000 people in Washington County –serving local families, schools, hospitals, and some of Oregon’s largest employers.

Why the Willamette River?

The mid-Willamette River at Wilsonville offers significant benefits: excellent finished water quality, redundancy, ownership and control of the supply, year-round reliability, and better value.

How Does it Work?

Tualatin Valley Water District and the Cities of Hillsboro and Beaverton are working together to plan for the safe introduction of the new supply into the partners’ existing water systems. We are committed to continuously providing high-quality water for our community, and a smooth transition when the new system comes online.

The Willamette River is the source of the region’s new, reliable water supply. Water is drawn from the river in Wilsonville, treated using advanced treatment at a state-of-the-art facility, and delivered to the Tualatin Valley Water District and the cities of Hillsboro and Beaverton, which will supply this high-quality drinking water to their communities. Water quality is continuously monitored—from the river intake to the advanced treatment facility and throughout the distribution system—delivering clean, safe water, that meets all state and federal drinking water regulatiosn, to homes and businesses.

Regional Benefits

For the Willamette Water Supply System (WWSS) partners, Tualatin Valley Water District, City of Hillsboro, and City of Beaverton, preparedness means securing an additional, resilient water source. The new seismically resilient and state-of-the-art water supply system will play a key role in water security for the WWSS partners’ customers and support regional recovery after a disaster. The system is designed and constructed to provide high quality water to the partners’ communities after an earthquake, during a drought, severe storms, or in the event other sources have water quality challenges.

The WWSS partners realize other preparedness benefits as well:

  • TVWD will benefit from local ownership and operational control of a large portion of its water supply needs. This cost-sharing partnership allows TVWD and its WWSS partners to control the decisions that benefit water quality and availability for their customers.
  • The City of Hillsboro currently has one water supply. The new WWSS will provide the security of an additional source for year-round reliability and to meet the needs of its growing community.
  • For City of Beaverton, the WWSS will provide additional water supply security for the growing city and improve its water supply resiliency.
